1619 Bad Ass Band - 1619 Bad Ass Band [Vinyl]

Mr Bongo proudly presents a reissue of the self-titled album by the 1619 Bad Ass Band, originally released in 1976. This New Jersey soul-funk gem captures the raw energy of mid-'70s underground funk and soul, making it a highly sought-after prize for collectors and DJs.

Originally released on the ultra-rare tax-scam imprint TSG Records, this album was the only release from the group formed by Khalid Abdul Shalid. Due to the nature of these 'tax-scam' labels, records were often pressed in extremely limited quantities with minimal promotion or distribution, leading to the album's initial obscurity. However, this obscurity has since cemented its status as a holy grail for diggers and DJs within the 1970s rare soul scene.

Musically, the album offers a unique and varied palette. From the luscious, dreamy ballad 'Rain' to the raw, drum-heavy funk of 'Love To Love', the group showcases impressive depth and versatility. Standout tracks include the string-laden stepper 'Just From You', the spacey synth lines of 'Nothing Can Stop My Loving You' which will appeal to modern soul fans, and 'Step Out', which features a heavy drum break sampled on Latyrx's 'Interlude'.

This reissue offers a chance to experience a collection of tracks that, despite the band never receiving the recognition they deserved at the time, are all winners.
