Abacus Horse by Geraldine Brooks - American Historical Romance Paperback

Based on the remarkable true story of the record-breaking thoroughbred, Lexington, Horse by Geraldine Brooks is an original, gripping, multi-layered reckoning with the legacy of enslavement and racism in America. This novel weaves together narratives spanning from 1850 Kentucky to modern-day Washington, DC, centered around the life and legacy of America's greatest racehorse.

The story begins in Kentucky in 1850, detailing the profound bond formed between an enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal destined for greatness. This horse achieves record-setting victories across the South. As the Civil War erupts, an itinerant young artist, famous for his paintings of the stallion, joins the Union forces and reunites with the horse and groom under perilous circumstances far from the racetrack.

The narrative shifts to Washington, DC, in 2019, where Jess, an Australian Smithsonian scientist, and Theo, a Nigerian-American art historian, connect through their shared fascination with the horse. Jess studies the stallion's bones for insights into his power and endurance, while Theo uncovers the forgotten history of the essential, unsung Black horsemen behind the horse's success.
