Rubble: A Novel

In a world ravaged by conflict, Rubble: A Novel by Seraj Assi plunges readers into the harrowing experience of a nameless survivor trapped beneath the debris of a bombing. Entombed in darkness, with no hope of immediate rescue, the protagonist must rely on his senses of hearing and smell, alongside the potent force of his imagination, to navigate the precarious boundary between life and death. Above, a genocide unfolds, and from his confined space, he witnesses its horrors in a way no unburied survivor could.

As time blurs and the lines between hallucination and reality merge, memories surface and fantastical visions emerge from the dust. This liminal state grants him a unique, almost supernatural clarity, a profound insight often found in those on the brink of death, suspended between worlds where time fractures and the mind sharpens. What begins as an act of desperate escapism evolves into a poignant chronicle of a people forced into hiding by relentless violence, a nation bearing the crushing weight of another's cruelty.

Within the darkness, the rubble transforms from a tomb into a grim sanctuary, a refuge from the inferno raging above. This debut novel by Seraj Assi is a testament to resilience in the face of annihilation, drawing readers into the intimate terror of one man's confinement and the collective suffering of his homeland.
