The Take [DVD]

Based on the best-selling novel by Martina Cole, The Take is a gripping four-part ITV drama mini-series starring Tom Hardy as Freddie Jackson. Released from prison in 1984 after serving a sentence for armed robbery, Freddie has no intention of leaving his life of crime behind. He aims to become the top dog in the East End underworld, leveraging his contacts and newly acquired knowledge for commercial and criminal gain.

Co-starring Brian Cox and Charlotte Riley, the series plunges viewers into the brutal London underworld of the mid-1980s and follows the subsequent decade of cultural and political change. Freddie's life takes unexpected turns as he navigates gang warfare and his own ambitions. The narrative also follows his younger cousin Jimmy (Shaun Evans), who dreams of rising through the ranks of the crime empire.

Despite its fast-paced narrative and occasional familiarity, The Take is a gritty and well-executed adaptation, spearheaded by a superb performance from Tom Hardy. It offers a compelling portrayal of the criminal underworld and is a must-watch for fans of crime dramas.
